Jhe-Yu (JY) Chen is an emerging lighting designer currently based in the lower mainland of BC, Canada.
A graduate of Taipei National University of the Arts, JY was shaped by diverse range of artistic practices and collaborative theatre experiences, where he assisted lighting designers on various productions. Through these experiences, he discovered that theatre as an art form rooted in connection. For him, lighting design is an intimate language through which he explores ideas and human experiences.
Deeply fascinated by the fluidity and interplay between light and shadow, and its relationship with the relativity of time. He finds a similarity between the process of designing lights and writing Chinese Calligraphy, the breath, the heart beat and how they embody life and stories.
After graduated from TNUA, JY worked as a lighting designer, programmer, electrician and technician in theatre. He is an Associate Member of IATSE local ADC659 and continues to develop his practice within the Canadian theatre community.
