Jhe-Yu (JY) Chen is an emerging lighting designer currently based in the Lower Mainland of BC, Canada.

Shaped by a diverse range of artistic practices and collaborative theatre experiences, JY has worked alongside lighting designers on various productions. Through these experiences, he discovered that theatre is an art form rooted in connection. For him, lighting design is an intimate language through which he explores ideas and human experiences.

Deeply fascinated by the fluid interplay of light and shadow, and their relationship to the relativity of time, JY draws a parallel between the art of lighting design and Chinese calligraphy. Both are shaped by rhythm, breath, and movement, capturing the pulse of life and expressing stories through the delicate balance of presence and absence.

JY works across lighting design, programming, electrics, and theatre technology. He is an Associate Member of IATSE Local ADC659 and continues to develop his practice within the Canadian theatre community.
